Recent protest by some against the depiction of Muhammad in a newspaper cartoon in Denmark shows that violence, as devident by the number of terrorist attacks around the world, is often used by Islamic movements to perform their mission. this often leads many people to conclude that islam and muslims are a source of violence, while in fact the relationship between violence ans it’s usage by Islamic militant movement is very complicated. That is why any measures taken to stop this problem including eliminating those militant groups seems to be ineffective, and even, increase the number of those movements and their use of violence. The only way to deal with this complexity is to understand the Islamic militant movements comprehensively, so that we can deal with them in more effective way.
For that reason, the center for the study of religion and culture (formerly part of Pusat Bahasa dan Budaya, or center for language and culture-CLC) of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta (UIN) will hold a short course on militant Islamic Movements: Politics of Identity, Violence and Democracy. The course will run for ten sessions from March 13 to 12 April 2006 at pusat Bahasa dan Budaya UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, and will be attended by 6 speakers of international repute.
if you interested in attending this course or in nominating a representative to participate in this course, please transfer $250 to our bank account 0017128682 at BNI Melawai (Murni Djamal PBB UIN Jakarta) ans fax the receipt to (62) (21) 7490756.
